Depends on how much horsepower you're gunning for. Generally, once you get past the headers, too much exhaust diameter won't hurt performance, but it will create a lot more weight, expense, and difficulty. If you have a fairly normal Cavalier, there's no point in an exhaust more than 2.5" in diameter. If you are building some sort of 250+ hp turbo monster, I'd go with a 3" exhaust.
