Steel Exhaust

A Car is made up of many different parts and systems that work together to make it run efficiently. The exhaust system is integral to a car's performance and efficiency, but is often neglected.

The exhaust system has and number of uses. It carries harmful exhaust fumes away from the engine as well as being important in ensuring good fuel consumption. It is also crucial to smooth and satisfactory driving.

How does a healthy Exhaust System affect your car, truck, van or SUV's performance?

There are a few different components that make up a complete exhaust system and they all have an important and distinct function. The main parts are the muffler, manifold, exhaust pipes and catalytic converter.

There are many harmful fumes and gases that are left over from the combustion of the the fuel and air mix when the engine is running. Some of thes gases include carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons (unburned), sulfur dioxide, lead and nitrogen oxides. A healthy exhaust system channels these fumes away from the engine.

Those gases are harmful to the environment and to us humans so they must be cleaned before they are sent out of the vehicle. With this essential task of the exhaust system, it becomes necessary for us to check it regularly for damages or corrosion that could adversely affect its proper functioning.

Exhaust system fall into two categories. These categories are the Dual or Twin Exhaust System or the Emission Control System.

Dual Exhaust System

Dual exhaust system has two tailpipes, which allows the engine to exhaust more freely, thereby lowering the back pressure which is inherent in an exhaust system. With a dual exhaust system, a sizable increase in engine horsepower can be obtained because the "breathing" capacity of the engine is improved, leaving less exhaust gases in the engine at the end of each exhaust stroke. This, in turn, leaves more room for an extra intake of the air-fuel mixture.

Emission Control System

This type of system works how the name suggests, by regulating the emmission of harmful gases expelled from the engine. They don't all do this the same way. Some systems stop pollutants being formed in the engine itself, while other systems convert harmful gases into harmless ones with a catalytic converter.

Parts of an Exhaust System

1. The Exhaust Manifold - This part is made of cast iron and is connected directly to the engine. It is designed to carry the gases from the combustion chambers to the exhaust pipes.

2. Catalytic converter - this is where the gaseous wastes are turned into water vapor and carbon dioxide.

3. The Muffler - This component main task is to 'muffle' the sound that the engine exhaust make while it is running. It does this by soaking up the sound energy of the gases that travel through it.

4. Exhaust Pipe - this part carries the gaseous waste out of the tail pipe. It is usually made of steel or stainless steel.

You should not delay the replacement of damaged exhaust system parts so that you avoid serious accidents and unwanted expenses. A clogged and glowing catalytic converter indicates serious problem so don't delay replacing it.

Stainless Steel Exhaust Mods

All hot car enthusiasts like to hear the burbling sound of a throaty stainless
steel exhaust that has been fitted onto a top motor. It is the quintessential
addition to your car that will get you noticed on the road and at car
modification shows. In addition to making your car look much better than if
you've just stuck with the stock full exhaust system, a full stainless steel
exhaust will also serve to improve the Brake Horse Power (BHP) of your vehicle.

Leading experts in performance cars have all the statistics on by how much particular
makes and models cars can be improved if you have certain exhausts fitted. For
further reading please do a search engine search and you'll find lots of
information out there about which exhausts to purchase if you're looking for a
particular power increase. But it would be a fair to say that many car
modifiers would make the decision to purchase a particular stainless steel
backbox based upon looks alone. Fair enough, a couple of horsepower difference
here and there does makes a difference in terms of performance but modifying
cars is as much how it looks as it is about performance improvements. Besides
air filters, alloys, engine mapping and many other forms of modifications all
contribute towards the performance, looks and, of course, sound of your car.

An important aspect to consider when purchasing a full exhaust system is the
condition of your current stock exhaust. Ok so this might sound a little
controversial but the most frugal of us would only upgrade once my current
system is on its way out but, let's be honest, many modifiers are willing to
pay for their hobby and will even upgrade to a full stainless steel exhaust
with their brand new car.

So if you're considering purchasing a new system then the first thing you will
need to do is look through some manufacturers brochures or visit a few websites
to check out some ideas about which style of exhaust you'd like. You may want a
similar system to the one that a car from your favourite car racing movie or
you friend might have an exhaust that you particularly like. You might want to
do the opposite and be different by sourcing an exhaust that you haven't seen
on another car. Or at least choose one that isn't very popular but is still a
very nice design. You could even have one designed for you and ask an exhaust maker
to make one for you based upon your own design! But you've have to really
splash the cash to make this possible!

whats this "steel weave" on my exhaust?

I have a 1994 ng saab 900 se and it has been extremely loud lately. we keep looking at the exhaust and it is all connected and we actually just replaced it a little while ago. No holes either. There is something on it though that looks like steel weave kind of like a wicker basket looks like. It is torn and im wondering if that could be the problem and how much does it cost to repair? sites would help

Front engine, front wheel drive cars all have a flex joint to allow the engine to torque sideways but let the exhaust remain in the same position. This flex joint is the steel weave thing that's torn. Go to a good muffler shop or the dealer for replacement. If the muffler shop just wants to replace it with solid pipe, it will create a vibration inside the car and rip out exhaust hangers further back.
