10 Great Collector Cars - Issue #2

This issue highlights ten exceptional collector cars which have crossed the auction block in recent weeks.

1968 AC Cobra 427 S/C MX1

After Shelby ceased producing Cobras, AC continued with the AC 428. The one being highlighted here is chassis MX1. It has an interesting history. According to a former owner, "To clarify some misconceptions, I am the original owner/builder. I purchased AC chassis MX1 in the summer of 1978 after hearing of its existence at the SAACII convention in Hershey, PA. It was a bare rolling chassis.

The aluminum body was purchased from Brian Angliss. The attaching superstructure was purchased from Mike McCluskey, a noted Cobra restorer. The components were assembled by an older Englishman in Sterling Heights Michigan. The side oiler 427 block was built by John Vermersch of Total Performance in Mt. Clemens, MI. I sold the vehicle in 1999 and that owner finished the build. The current owner is the third one. I can answer almost any question requarding MX1."

1983 Bentley Corniche Convertible

Reportedly, only three Corniches were built in 1983. This Bentley Corniche Convertible looks fantastic in Tudor Red with a Buckskin Everflex top. Power is from a 6.75 liter V8. The interior is sumptuous tan leather with plush carpet.

1957 Chevrolet 3100 Pickup

Here's a classic Chevrolet 3100 pickup truck in Brewster Green, which was the recipient of a frame-off nut and bolt restoration. There are less than 1,300 miles on the restoration. With over $75k invested, the truck is flawless and consistently wins awards. This 3100 has the original 235.5 6-cylinder with a few minor modifications including an intake manifold by Offenhouser, Fenton headers, two single Rochester carburetors and Wayne valve cover and side. The transmission is a Saginaw 4-spd with 3.38:1 ring and pinion at the rear in the original housing. All gauges, electronics and other systems on the truck are fully-operational.

1963 Dodge Polara 500 Max Wedge

Rare and original Dodge Polara 500 Max Wedge that will blow the proverbial doors right off most modern sports cars in a straight line sprint. With over 400 hp from 426 cubic inches, dual-quad carburetors, a cross ram intake, and 3.91 gears, this Max Wedge used to eat Chevys for breakfast...still does.

1951 Jaguar XK 120 S Roadster

Completely restored and in concours condition. Gorgeous matching numbers Jaguar XK 120 S Roadster. Black with a rich read leather interior, it has side curtains, stainless steel exhaust, fog lamps, sporty black wire wheels and black tonneau cover.

1960 Jaguar XK 150 FHC

This is a professionally restored Jaguar XK 150 coupe 3.8 with a 4-spd transmission with additional overdrive and four-wheel disc brakes. Frame-off nut and bolt restoration. The transmission is the only non-matching numbers as the car was auto originally. The original tool kit, jack and manual are present. This XK 150 won best interior at the Pacific Grove Car Show in 2009.

1962 Jaguar MkII Saloon

Wonderful matching-numbers 1962 Jaguar MkII. Restored to concours condition. Rust-free car before restoration. The car is absolutely stunning in person. The red paint and chrome highlight each other in a striking fashion. The tan leather interior is near flawless and smells wonderful. It also sports burled woodwork and reclining seats inside. This is a 99+ points MkII. A steering rack was added to improve responsiveness.

1981 Lamborghini Countach S

The Countach was such a famous icon of the 70s and 80s that it is often overlooked just how rare these cars are. With only 2,042 produced, they're only getting rarer. The Countach highlighted here is in classic red with a white leather interior.

1914 Packard 138 Phaeton Convertible

Only 12 of examples are known to survive. A frame-off restoration was completed in 1985. The car has full provenance. It's been driven only 187 miles since restoration. The car is correct with proper nickel finish, wheels, gauges, etc. This 138 Phaeton Convertible is one of the oldest, complete Packards known to exist. It used to be owned by Warner Brothers and appeared in popular movies, including the 'Wild Bunch' and 'East of Eden'. The engine is a 60 hp 6-cylinder L-head and is connected to 3-spd transmission.

1975 Pontiac Grand Ville Brougham Convertible

What a time capsule with only 2,100 original miles. Reportedly, only 4,519 of these Pontiac Grand Ville Brougham Convertibles were produced, but this one might be the best in existence. It is loaded with features, including climate control, rally gauges, tilt wheel, cruise control, power windows and seats, cornering lamps and more. The engine is a powerful 455 V8.
