I often wonder how much of the success of the Macintosh amongst designers and artists stems from Apple's original decision to go with a single button mouse. As anybody who works in a studio will tell you, a very high proportion of visually creative people are left handed. I think it is something to do with the way that our brains are wired. Creative and intuitive thinking requires a lot of right brain activity and, it's just a guess, but I suspect being strong in that area can pre-dispose you left handedness.

Whatever the reason, the Mac's single button mouse means that left or right handedness doesn't make a difference, whereas using the IBM PC's double button mouse can present a significant challenge to a left handed novice user. Back in the days when almost everybody was a novice user, that gave Apple a significant advantage for a left hander and I suspect the single button mouse is probably the source of the Mac's ease-of-use myth.

The thing is that a two button mouse provides an experienced user with a much more powerful interface device than a single button one. Many of the things that Windows and Linux users routinely do with a single hand gesture require the mouse and keyboard to achieve on a Mac. Apple acknowledged this a few years ago by first providing support for the two button mouse, and then by introducing their own two button variant.

Two button mice are more useful than single button mice, but they also remain a problem for left handers. The basic problem is this: should you learn to use the mouse left-handed with a standard set-up, or should you configure it so the button functions are reversed to provide yourself with a much more intuitive and effective interface.

Using the mouse left handed with a standard set-up makes the buttons very awkward to use. Everybody, whether they are left or right handed wants to point at things with their index finger. Using a standard set-up means either pointing with your middle finger (very difficult), or using your index finger for both right and left buttons. It's painful to watch somebody trying to do this and when I see it I always recommend that they switch to using a mouse configured for a left hander.

There is no need to buy a special left handed mouse. The process of reversing the button functions so that the right button is the one used for pointing, clicking and dragging is a very simple configuration change that takes only few seconds to achieve on a PC or a Mac. The advantages are obvious as soon as you begin working with it; if you set your mouse up in this way then you have immediate access to the same intuitive way of working that a right hander has. Using the mouse becomes the fluid and simple process that it should be.

So why wouldn't you do it? The problem comes if you need to share your computer with right handers, or you regularly have to use other people's machines. Reversing the mouse buttons will make the machine virtually unusable for them. If you forget to undo the change they may find it very disconcerting and may not know how to fix the problem.

There are a number of potential solutions that you can try. If you are sharing a machine, then the best solution is to set up your own individual log in account. That way, you can set your computer up in any way that suits you.

If that is not possible, the alternative is to set the machine up so that the mouse buttons can be reversed easily using a hot key combination or by clicking on an icon. There are numerous free utility programs available that will help you do this. For a Windows PC there is a small, very effective freeware program called SwapMouseButtons that I can recommend. Are both PCs on the same network? Many connected via a router? If so you should be able to open up a shared folder and put the files you want in there and transfer them across.

Otherwise, borrow a USB drive and use that - they only cost about £5 so cheap to buy as well.

Other option is upload/download via some free web-space. You ISP probably gives you about 5GB, or there are plenty of free ones.
