Can I weld 4130 with a stainless steel welding rod? That is a frequently asked welding question seen on all kinds of internet forums for car racing, home built airplanes, go carts, baja racing, bicycle builders, drag racing, and other motorsports forums.

It is obvious that a lot of people are tig welding 4130 using stainless filler rods like 308 but that does not mean it is any better than good old E70s2 mild steel tig rod. Why would you want to use a more expensive welding rod if it was not proven better?

I can get E70S2 tig welding rod for around 3 bucks a pound. But 308 stainless tig rod runs about 10 bucks a pound. Other stainless steel rods that some people use for tig welding chromoly, like 309, 310, or 312 cost even more, like over 20 dollars per pound.

I am all for paying a little more when something works better, but I need proof and the only proof I have found is people saying they like the way stainless rods weld. Sure the weld looks cool when you use stainless rods...all shiny with different colors...and you know what that means?

Nothing!

The problem  in using stainless filler rod for welding chromoly steel is that different welders will get different results. Not surface appearance, but microstructure. Every welder will get a different degree of dilution and therefore the microstructure of the weld done with stainless filler metal might be unpredictable.

Predictability is very important when it comes to things like airplanes and race cars. Just like old Hank told his son Bobby on King of the Hill..."Bobby, Women love predictability!" Using E70S2 filler rod results in a more predictable weld microstructure that is less dependent on the welder for good results.

Predictability in both welding and women is underrated.

Hyundai PM850 for Rhys Millen Racing & Volkswagen Hat-Trick Dakar Rally

Hyundai is not known too much for motorsports, At least since the last few years that they were able to save enough money in banks.

However, when they are in business now, things are not easy. This is known as the Hyundai Genesis PM850 for Rhys Millen Racing. It develops HP of up to 850.

This might be the very strong that Hyundai has ever been, because it it uses just 675 hp and will try to win in 2010 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Unlimited Class. The power generates from V6 Lambda engine with 4.1 liter.

Other feature of the RMR Hyundai Genesis PM580 include sequential gearbox, high performance brakes, carbon fiber body and many racing stuff such as AWD system. Time will tell how it will perform at the race track.

Volkswagen wants diesel hat-trick at Dakar Rally

South America is one of the important markets for the growth of Volkswagen besides being a perfect venue for expanding the popularity and awareness that is enjoyed by Volkswagen.

Lancer Installation Prices?

I was thinking about adding a carbon fiber hood, grill, front splitter, and a bumper cap onto my 2009 Lancer GTS, specifically the ones from Road Race Motorsports. Any idea how much it would cost to get the installed by a dealer/ local body shop? Also will add the license plate surround so the back of my Lancer wouldnt feel left out.

All of those can be installed yourself. RRM also gives instructions on how to do them for those who completely don't know how to. You can even call them and they will walk you through it. If you take it to the shop. They will either charge you $50-$80 an hour and when I say they take their time, they really do take there time. It could take them exactly one hour to two hours for them to install the CF hood themselves. So that equals nearly $160 out the door. For the grill, its so easy to install it. Even your neighbor can do it. It takes less than 30 minutes to do and even better, its free. You take it to the shop... they will probably take about one hour and there goes $80 out the door. So you just wasted $240 for the grill and hood itself. When you could've used it for an intake or exhaust. If you still don't feel comfortable about it, it would be better to just go on like... craigslist and post up "Help wanted/Help installing car parts" and pay for each part installed without paying them hourly. Then someone locally will come by and give you a hand and you can pay like $10 for the grill, and $50 for the hood, or $50 for the front splitter. That would be a better choice for these very easy installs.
