General Motors is going through a cataclysmic change, one that will certainly pull the company out of its current financial plight or result in bankruptcy, even the possible dissolution of the company. In a quest to right the listing ship, the company is divesting itself of several brands including its share of Isuzu, Fuji Heavy Industries [Subaru], and others. As far as its wholly owned brands, speculation has been rife that one, two, maybe even three brands might be discontinued or sold. Two of the most talked about makes for possible divestment are Hummer - the niche military-style SUV brand - and Saab - the Swedish automaker. Although both brands are currently fairly weak, GM has maintained that the two makes will not only survive, but receive fresh product and backing. Let's take a look at two of GM's most vulnerable brands and what the company may have in store for each one.
Saab -- Saab enthusiasts have been highly disappointed ever since General Motors snapped up the Swedish automaker back during the early 1990s. Admirer's hopes that the brand would receive some deep pocket support haven't quite worked out the way many would have wanted it to. Instead, the Saab brand is simply a shell of its former self with most models based on other automaker's platforms including the Subaru inspired 9-2x and the GMC inspired 9-7x.
Saab's future more than likely rests with Opel, GM's big European brand based in Germany. Future production of some Saab cars is likely to go to Germany with rebadged Opels being sold as Saabs. For the long term, look for every single Saab model to based on someone else's technology, effectively ending what was once a unique Swedish brand.
Hummer -- Desert Storm gave rise to the Humvee and soon after the war ended, the AM General company began to produce civilian versions of its military vehicle to fulfill consumer demand. By the late 1990s, General Motors bought out the rights to the Hummer name, but GM still relies on AM General to produce the two largest models, while building the H3 itself.
Despite intentionally low sales, the Hummer name has managed to thrive. Celebrities, financial moguls, and everyday citizens have been attracted to the brand which has given GM a bit of a "halo" effect. With gas prices surging, demand will certainly drop for the larger Hummers, but GM may counter that with stronger emphasis on the H3 and the development of the H4, a vehicle reportedly much like the compact Jeep Wrangler.
Of course, not everyone is happy with GM's plans with the two brands, but then again these aren't normal times for the struggling automaker. In time, GM's plans may be refined and Saab could still be sold, especially if Swedish interests step forward. In all, GM is attempting to right its listing ship without peeling off too many brands. Will it work? That is hard to say, but if you are a fan of the GM you certainly hope that it will.

Troubleshooting No-start Vehicle Problems
There is nothing more infuriating than getting into your car only to find out that it would not start. As with other vehicle problems, the causes could range from a mere nuisance to major repairs. However, every driver must know the root cause of the problem and to give it a timely solution.
Murphy’s Law describes all about such situations: whatever can go wrong will go wrong, and at the worst possible time. No start problem could happen when you are already late for work or the car is 200 degrees below zero out. Now, that makes you even more infuriated and you realize that indeed anything that can go wrong will go wrong.
Troubleshooting no start problems would be easy if drivers know its causes. There are common causes and reasons behind the problem. The first reason is the failure of fuel pump failure or the restriction of fuel filter. This is the most prevalent cause of no-start problems in recent times. This is primarily due to the negligence of vehicle owners to enforce scheduled maintenance. Said negligence could be mirrored in part by not having the fuel filter changed at right intervals. Some fuel filters cost $100.00 however in vehicles like the Jeep Grand Cherokees which was built in the late 90s, replacement of fuel pump could cost about $800.00! How many times do you want to spend that much?
One significant cause for premature fuel pump failure is when the driver allows the fuel level to go lower than ¼ tank for extended periods or running completely out of fuel. This will make the electric fuel pump to run dry, which eventually destroys the pump. GMs Vortec engines - 4.3L, 5.7L with the CPI fuel injection system – fail in many ways. Some of the ways include plastic tubes leak, fuel pressure regulator leak, and when poppets get plugged.
No start problem could also be attributed to timing belt failure or timing belt tensioner failure. Basically, timing belts are engineered to last approximately 40,000-60,000 miles under normal use. If these belts break, it could result to engine damage. But for vehicles manufactured by Acura, Honda, Mitsubishi, and Nissan brands, the repairs would not be so costly. Moreover, it is recommended that the timing belt be changed at regular intervals. The tensioner should be replaced if questionable.
Another root cause of no start problems is distributor failure. When your vehicle breaks down without any warning - that could be an indication of the problem. Other symptoms include history of intermittent breakdown and intermittent failure to start from cold, which may be caused by security system failure. Mitsubishi electric distributors in the Ford Probe and Mazda vehicles have a high failure rate.
Electrical trouble is another cause of no-start problem. Ford ignition switches, manufactured in the early 90s, have been known to cause fires. Hence, every driver must check them regularly to shun future bother. One should not only focus on Volvo distributor rotor or Land Rover brake pads; he must inspect every auto part to ensure that it is in working condition.
Batteries, clamps and cables could also cause no start problems. Drivers and owners alike oftentimes neglect corroded batteries. The fact is, batteries do not last forever; do not confuse them with diamonds. Moreover, poor maintenance could result to battery failures that lead to other vehicle problems.
ECM/ PCM failure is also a no-start cause. This problem is common to GM products manufactured on mid 80s. Other causes include inaccurate fuel gauges, lack of oil, plugged exhaust systems, bad fuel injectors, and worn flywheel.

Cat gone, any harm . . . . . . . .?
My son removed the cat and muffler from his '00 Jeep Cherokee and put in a small muffler with straight exhaust pipe. The second 02 sensor is now out of the system so the check engine light is on but it appears to run normally and the fuel mileage has not dropped.
Is there any potential trouble later on, and are there any aftermarket parts that plug into the 02 sensor plug that tells the computer that everything is normal?
actually it can cause carbon buildup, extreme heat and yes sometimes better performance.a high flow cat would be better,every1 has a part to play!ok just for your info, search around the internet and look for the o2 sensors normal operating resistance range.substitute a resistor in circuit to provide said resistance(aim for roughly the middle of the scale)that will turn off the mil(it should).the resistance value should be printed online somewhere, its used for diagnosing the system.
