Can I run a Wolfdale dual core processor with an intel quad core?

I am adding new parts to the PC i built. I want to upgrade from my old dual core processor to a quad core processor, but i have heard good things about Wolfdale processors. I play a lot of games on my PC, but i also do school work on it and a lot of multitasking. Is it possible for me to run a dual core Wolfdale processor with an Intel quad core? If not, which one should i get? Or should i get an AMD?

It's really a matter of the bios and FSB compatibility - not sure why you'd run both a Wolfdale dual and a quad core unless you have a server board with dual sockets.

quad cores will help more with multitasking as each core can process a single app.
I'd see if you could run a Yorkfield like a q9300, these are fairly cheap.

obviously an i5/i7 or AMD upgrade requires a new board and possibly DDR3
